The movie is based on the Marvel Comics character the Black Panther, and stars Chadwick Boseman as the king and protector of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. "Black Panther" received widespread acclaim for its diverse and predominantly Black cast, strong representation of African culture, and themes of identity, power, and responsibility. The film's success at the box office and cultural impact marked a significant milestone in the representation of minorities in cinema. Awards and nominations further acknowledged the film's excellence. Citizen Kane is considered by many critics and fans as the greatest film ever and is the number one movie on several film institute lists. It is an American drama released in 1941, directed by Orson Welles who co-wrote the screenplay with Herman Mankiewicz.
The plot follows the life of Charles Foster Kane, a character based on several American media moguls including William Randolph Hearst. The title role is played by Welles and opens with an aged Charles Foster Kane in a huge mansion named Xanadu. Kane is seen on his deathbed muttering the famous line “Rosebud”. The film follows the trials and tribulations of the media publishing magnate throughout the early 1900’s and the search for the meaning of “Rosebud”. It famously closes with a visual of a burning wooden sled embossed with the name.
The film is considered innovative and influential for its cinematography by Gregg Toland, editing by Rober Wise and music by Bernard Herrmann. It was a huge critical success but not at the box office, failing to recoup its costs. After hearing about Citizen Kane, William Randolph Hearst banned all mention of the film from his newspapers, including advertising and reviews. In the mid 1950’s it was re-released and came back to public attention and received renewed recognition. The film received 9 Academy Award nominations with a win for Best Original Screenplay. The film cemented Welles as a significant and influential player in the Hollywood scene. It is considered by many as the most influential film ever with impact on filmmaking for many years to follow.
