Bohemian Rhapsody
“Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen is one of the most popular rock songs ever.  It was released in 1975 as part of their Night At The Opera album.  It features a unique mixture of complex vocals and operatic singing.  It features several sections and a famous guitar solo that is revered by fans around the world.  The song is a six-minute suite that singer Freddie Mercury referred to as a “mock opera”.  The song’s recording was incredibly complex, utilizing 24 track tape and 200 tracks used for overdubs.

It topped the charts in the UK and several other countries and is the band’s third best selling single.  In the US, it reached #9 on the charts, but saw renewed popularity after being featured in the movie Wayne’s World, after which it reached #2 on the charts.  It has been certified diamond, meaning sales of 10 million or more.  Besides its unique song structure, the song is known for its distinct lyrics.  The meaning of the song has been highly debated, as it portrays the tragedy and sorrows of a young man. The band has never fully revealed the meaning behind the tune.  It was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004.
Stairway To Heaven
“Stairway to Heaven” is considered the #1 rock song of all time by many fans and critics.  It is certainly one of the most played songs on the radio, even today.  It was released in 1971 by Led Zeppelin as part of their Led Zeppelin IV album.

There are three main sections to the song, with increasing intensity, culminating in Jimmy Page’s famous guitar solo, which many consider one of the greatest ever recorded.  While it didn’t chart very high either in the US or UK, it is a staple of classic rock radio and is cited as the most requested song ever. Because of this, many cover bands have adopted the motto “No Stairway” and it is considered impolite to play it while trying out guitars at a music store.  In live performances, the band often extends the song to 10 minutes or longer, with extended guitar solos by Page.  There is some controversy surrounding the song and the band was sued in 2014 by the group Spirit, who toured with Zeppelin in the early years.  Spirit filed a copyright infringement lawsuit claiming that parts of “Stairway” sounded almost exactly like their song “Taurus”. Spirit eventually lost the case.
