Sir Daniel Day-Lewis is an award winning actor, best known for his film roles. Born in London in 1957, he has won numerous awards and nominations. LIke many actors, he began his career on the stages of London, and relied on the “method acting” technique of complete focus and intent on the character. His film career began in earnest in the 1980’s, including roles in movies such as The Bounty, My Beautiful Laundrette, and The Unbearable Lightness of Being. In 1989, he starred in My Left Foot, earning him an Academy Award and British Academy Film Award for Best Actor. His portrayal of a disabled man who can only use his left foot was hailed as a masterful achievement.
He retired from acting for several years in 1997, after starring in The Boxer. In 2000, he picked up his career again starring in Gangs of New York, directed by Martin Scorcese and co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio. His role as the evil gang leader William “Bill The Butcher” Cutting earned him multiple award nominations. He picked up his second Academy Award for his portrayal of an oil baron in the 2007 film There Will Be Blood. This was followed by his starring role in Lincoln, directed by Steven Speilberg, for which he earned his third Academy Award for best actor. He is the only actor to have won 3 awards in that category. He has also won 2 Golden Globe awards, 3 Screen Actors Guild awards and 4 British Film Academy awards.
