David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon are well known for being hosts of late shows on network television.  Letterman was famously upset when Jay Leno was chosen to host The Tonight Show when Johnny Carson retired, and Fallon was Leno’s successor.  Letterman went on to host Late Nite with David Letterman on a rival network.
Letterman
David Letterman is an American television host and personality. Letterman was born on April 12th, 1947 in Indianapolis, Indianna. When Letterman was a child, he was known in many of his classes as the "class clown". At Ball State University, Letterman studied television and radio. He first worked as a radio talk show host, host of a children's program and movie night show, a weatherman, and a news anchor. In 1975, Letterman relocated and moved to Los Angeles where he wrote for sitcoms such as Good Times, and was "mentored" by Johnny Carson, appearing on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

In 1978, Letterman was the regular guest host on Carson's show, and because of this, in 1980 he was offered The David Letterman Show, his own daytime talk show. The David Letterman Show ran for 3 months, and became very successful. Letterman was given a late show that followed the Tonight Show, making it the late Late Night with David Letterman airing on NBC. Letterman moved his show to CBS when Jay Leno replaced Carson in 1992. In 1992, Letterman also created his own production company, Worldwide Pants. In 2006, Letterman renewed a contract with CBS on continuing his show through 2010. In 2014, Letterman announced his retirement that would come in 2015, where he would pass his show onto Stephen Colbert (who replaced him). In 2017, Letterman was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor

In 2017, Letterman returned to television with his new Netflix talk show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman. In 2018, Barack Obama was his first guest. From 1969 to 1977, Letterman was married to Michele Cook. He then dated Merril Markoe, but then began his relationship with Regina Lasko, who he had a son with in 2003, and married in 2009.
Jimmy Fallon
Jimmy Fallon, or James Thomas Fallon Jr, is an American comedian, late night host, and actor. Fallon was born on September 19th, 1974 in Brooklyn, New York. Throughout his childhood, he was a fan of Saturday Night Live. He attended, but dropped out of College of St. Rose in Albany, New York, but then moved to Los Angeles to try a career in comedy. In '90s, Fallon decided to move back to New York so he could audition for Saturday Night Live. He joined as a part of the 1998-1999 cast.

In 2004, he announced that he was leaving the show. He starred in the movie Taxi in 2004, Fever Pitch in 2005, and Factory Girl in 2006. In 2008, Fallon took over Conan O'brien's late night show on NBC. Late Night with Jimmy Fallon first aired in 2009. In 2013, Fallon announced he was taking over Jay Leno's show, and aired The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for the first time in 2014. Fallon has released two comedy albums: The Bathroom Wall in 2002, and Blow Your Pants Off in 2012. Jimmy has released numerous books, including many children's books. He wrote Your Baby's First Word Will Be Dada in 2015, Everything Is Mama in 2017, and This Is Baby in 2019. He also co-wrote the book I Hate This Place: The Pessimist's Guide to Life in 1999 with his sister. Fallon has hosted many television awards shows such as the MTV Movie Awards, the Golden Globes, and the Emmys. In 2007, Fallon married Nancy Juvonen. In 2013 they welcomed their first daughter, and in 2014, they welcomed their second.
