When Letterman was a child, he was known in many of his classes as the "class clown". At Ball State University, Letterman studied television and radio. He first worked as a radio talk show host, host of a children's program and movie night show, a weatherman, and a news anchor. In 1975, Letterman relocated and moved to Los Angeles where he wrote for sitcoms such as Good Times, and was "mentored" by Johnny Carson, appearing on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
In 1978, Letterman was the regular guest host on Carson's show, and because of this, in 1980 he was offered The David Letterman Show, his own daytime talk show. The David Letterman Show ran for 3 months, and became very successful. Letterman was given a late show that followed the Tonight Show, making it the late Late Night with David Letterman airing on NBC. Letterman moved his show to CBS when Jay Leno replaced Carson in 1992. In 1992, Letterman also created his own production company, Worldwide Pants. In 2006, Letterman renewed a contract with CBS on continuing his show through 2010. In 2014, Letterman announced his retirement that would come in 2015, where he would pass his show onto Stephen Colbert (who replaced him). In 2017, Letterman was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
