David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon are well known for being hosts of late shows on network television.  Letterman was famously upset when Jay Leno was chosen to host The Tonight Show when Johnny Carson retired, and Fallon was Leno’s successor.  Letterman went on to host Late Nite with David Letterman on a rival network.
Letterman
David Michael Letterman was born on April 12, 1947, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is an American television host, comedian, writer, and producer. He started an early career as a radio talk show host and weatherman in Indianapolis and later moved to Los Angeles in 1975 to pursue comedy writing. He found his way into stardom through frequent guest appearances and guest hosting on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, under the mentorship of whom he achieved tremendous success.

Letterman began his late-night television reign on February 1, 1982, with NBC's Late Night with David Letterman. The show was an overnight critical hit, earning praise for its wry humor, offbeat features like "Stupid Pet Tricks," and smart-alecky exchanges with bandleader Paul Shaffer. After a highly publicized move to CBS in 1993, he debuted Late Show with David Letterman, where he continued to break the mold of late-night talk shows for over two decades. Together, Letterman hosted 6,080 episodes on both shows, the longest streak of any late-night talk show host in American television history until he left Late Show on May 20, 2015. His influence on TV and comedy is enormous, winning many Emmy Awards and the prestigious Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2017.

Since leaving the round-the-clock grind of late nights behind, Letterman has been steadfast in reaching out to audiences with other pursuits. His most visible current endeavor is the Netflix talk show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, which premiered in 2018 and features extended, intimate interviews with prominent politicians, celebrities, and athletes like Barack Obama, JAY-Z, and Billie Eilish. He has also been a guest on other visits, such as to the "ALL IN: COMEDY ABOUT LOVE Gala Night" in December 2024. Letterman is a comedy icon who continues to be widely respected for his distinctive style and enduring impact.
Jimmy Fallon
James Thomas "Jimmy" Fallon, born on September 19, 1974, in Brooklyn, New York, is a television host and comedian whose style is noted by a high-energy and upbeat demeanor that has made him a household name. From being one of the fan favorites at Saturday Night Live to hosting one of late-night TV's most popular shows, his journey is a reflection of his positive energy. Fallon's big break came in 1998 when he was put on the cast of "Saturday Night Live." He became a favorite with the audience, and viewers loved him for his musical impressions, impeccable comedic timing, and tendency to break character. His co-anchoring of the "Weekend Update" segment with Tina Fey is one of the show's most remembered times. After leaving SNL after six years, Fallon transitioned to the big screen prior to his return to TV in 2009 to host "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon." It was here that he truly began establishing his own style, adding viral video parodies, musical battles, and audience interaction to the late-night format. This style won him a dedicated following and prepared him for his ascension to the lofty host's chair of "The Tonight Show" in 2014. Fallon has been breaking new ground in the last few years. He has explored further with his imagination through his production company, Electric Hot Dog, a production company behind the Emmy-winning That's My Jam. He has also recently released a new children's book and a comedy album, once again showcasing his diverse talents. Jimmy Fallon's legacy is marked by his ability to reach the masses with a combination of wholesome comedy, musical talent, and genuine passion for entertainment, making him an American comedy institution.
