Denzel Washington was born in 1954 in Mount Vernon NY. He is a well known actor, producer and director who has won numerous awards. Washington is a star on both screen and stage. His first big break came in 1982 when he starred in the NBC hospital drama St. Elsewhere, which ran until 1988. He then went on to star in the film Cry Freedom, directed by Richard Attenborough, for which he received his first Academy Award nomination. He went on to win his first Oscar in 1989 for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of an ex-slave soldier in Glory.
Washington is a frequent collaborator with director Spike Lee, who helmed the film Malcom X with Washington starring in the title role, earning him an Academy Award nomination for best actor. In the 1990’s, he starred in several well received films including Philadelphia, playing the lawyer of a gay man with AIDS, Pelican Brief, with Julia Roberts, Crimson Tide, with Gene Hackman, and The Hurricane, portraying wrongly convicted boxer Rubin ‘The Hurricane’ Carter. In 2001, he won an Academy Award for Best Actor for the film Training Day, playing a corrupt cop in this thriller.
He received the Cecil B. Demille lifetime achievement award from the Golden Globes in 2016 and was named the Greatest Actor of the 21st century by the NY Times. Washington also has an acclaimed theater career, winning a Tony Award in 2010 for his portrayal in the August Wilson play Fences, which he later adapted as a film which he directed and produced, and was nominated for Academy Awards. Gwyneth Paltrow was born in Los Angeles in 1972 and is the daughter of Hollywood stars, actress Blythe Danner and director Bruce Paltrow. She is a successful actress, entrepreneur and author, making her mark for her role in the film “Shakespeare in Love” for which she won an Academy Award in 1998. Some of her other well-known roles include the “Iron Man” films, “Seven”, “Sliding Doors”, “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and “Contagion”. She won an Emmy in 2011 for her guest appearance on the TV show “Glee”. In 2004, after becoming a mother, Paltrow significantly slowed down her acting career, but she launched other ventures. She has seen success as the founder of her own company, Goop, which offers products for wellness and beauty. It is a multi-million dollar company but has experienced some controversy. The company paid a settlement for unsubstantiated claims about health benefits of one of its products and has been criticized for their products’ high costs. Paltrow has also written several healthy living cook books. She is also known for her philanthropy, supporting several causes that are important to her.
