The Donkey Kong franchise is one of the most successful in history. The first arcade game featured the debut of the Donkey Kong and Mario characters, both of which have appeared in countless spin offs and sequels. The first game was introduced in 1981 and was so successful that two sequels were quickly released in1982 and 1983. The original gameplay features Mario trying to ascend a construction site to rescue his girlfriend while dodging barrels and fireballs thrown by Donkey, an ape. The sequels, Donkey Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong 3, were variations on the original gameplay. The game was ported to all the home gaming systems and was a big success.
There was even a cartoon TV series that aired in 1997. In 2007, a documentary,The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, showcased the competitive following of the original arcade game. A popular phrase “It's on like Donkey Kong” was inspired by the original game. The Donkey Kong character has crossed over into many games, including several in the Mario series and Smash Brothers.
