The Weeknd
Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, stage name The Weeknd, born February 16, 1990, in Toronto, Canada, is one of the music legends of the modern age who transformed R&B. His enigmatic persona and genre-defying music have made him one of the most influential musicians of his time. The Weeknd started in 2011 with three critically acclaimed mixtapes, introducing a dark, ambient sound that blended R&B and electronic music. His major-label breakthrough, "Beauty Behind the Madness," gave rise to hit singles like "Can't Feel My Face" and "The Hills," catapulting him into superstardom. He went on to dominate the charts with releases like "Starboy" and the record-breaking "After Hours," which featured the world phenomenon "Blinding Lights," a record that was the most-streamed song in Spotify history. The Weeknd continued to mature his craft in the years that followed. His 2022 album "Dawn FM" was a conceptual album with a retro-futuristic style. His highly anticipated sixth studio album, "Hurry Up Tomorrow," released on January 31, 2025, was the final installment in a trilogy and garnered positive reviews. He also tried his hand at acting, co-creating and starring in HBO's salacious series The Idol. His collaborations with artists like Playboi Carti and Justice on the upcoming album, and his starring role in a companion film with the same name, also reflect his drive as an artistic performer. The Weeknd's legacy is defined by the artistic risks he takes, his ability to blend pop accessibility with a dark, brooding style, and total creative control. He remains a powerful presence, always testing the boundaries of music, film, and art.
