Fortnite is a super popular online video game released in 2017. There are three different game modes: Fortnite: Save The World, which is a tower-defense and survival game played in teams of 4; Fortnite Battle Royale in which 100 players fight for the last person standing; and Fortnite Creative where players can create battle arenas and worlds. From the beginning it was a phenomenon, drawing in 125 million players in less than a year. Through 2020, it has generated $9 billion in sales. Each version of the game has its own set of rules and objectives. Battle Royale and Creative are both free to play, while Save The World has a fee.
It has won many awards over the years from gaming sites and media. It has been criticized for its violence and inappropriateness for kids and has been the subject of several controversies. There have been several hated updates, such as the addition of Mechs and planes. The makers of the game have been sued for copyright infringement for some of its characters and elements. There have been cases of accounts being hacked which the developers were slow to respond to. It continues to be popular: as of 2020, there are 80.4 million monthly users with up to 4 million concurrent players.

Subsequent releases have settings during the cold war, future worlds and even outer space. There have been over 20 releases, with some sub-series/themes such as Black Ops and Modern Warfare. As of 2021, the franchise has sold more than 400 million copies, making it the best selling first person shooter ever and the fourth best selling franchise of all time, after Mario, Tetriis and Pokemon. It has been ported to all major video game consoles, mobile, handheld and PC.
Starting in 2006, the Call of Duty games were being used in esports competitions for prize money. The gameplay of the initial release simulates fighting in WW II and includes AI allies who help the player out, creating a greater emphasis on team/squad play compared to solo play. There are a series of missions, which are completed by accomplishing specific objectives. The focus is on a simulated battlefield during war, and the player can choose between American, British and Soviet campaigns. The first installment was well received by critics and fans and won several Game of the Year awards.
