Both of these first-person "shooters" are considered to be revolutionary in the video game space, but which reigns supreme? Since it's launch in 2001, the Halo franchise has sold over 80 million copies and has generated an estimated $5 Billion in revenue! Just a few short years later, The Call of Duty Franchise launched in 2003 and has since sold over 400 million today copies across all it's game -- netting as estimated $27+ billion in revenue.

Halo
The Halo franchise is owned and developed by Xbox Industries (a division of Microsoft).  It falls under the military/sci-fi first person shooter genre.  The first game, Halo: Combat Evolved was released exclusively on Xbox and it became the “killer game” that put Xbox on the map.  The gameplay takes place in the 26th century and focuses on mankind's battles with a variety of alien species.  The name “Halo” comes from a series of advanced weapons that appear in the game.

The games have sold over 81 million copies, generating over $6 billion in sales, making it one of the best selling games ever. In addition, the media empire spawned by the game has made Halo on of the highest grossing media franchises, including books, comics, graphic novels, short movies, animated films and feature length films.  The original trilogy was released after the initial game, with Halo 2 in 2004 and Halo 3 in 2007 along with expansion packs.  There were many future game releases, including spin-offs and expansion packs,

The latest game, Halo Infinite, was released in 2021.  Critics have praised Halo for it’s innovative gameplay and storyline and some of the soundtracks have even appeared on the Hot 100 charts.  The fan base is huge and some of the characters are considered iconic.  The Master Chief character even appears as a wax figure in Madame Tussands in Las Vegas. 
Call Of Duty
Call of Duty is an older and highly successful first-person shooter video game series published by Activision that is known for its realistic warfare and fast-paced action. First launched in 2003, the series started with historical settings like World War II before also transitioning to modern, Cold War, and even future warfare. The game generally involves fast shooting, both in exciting single-player story modes as well as competitive multiplayer matches. The series has sold over 500 million copies and generated $30 billion in revenue as of 2022, making it one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time. New achievements and innovations continue to put the franchise at the forefront of gaming. In 2024, on October 25, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was released, with new features including omnidirectional movement, allowing players to run and dive in any direction. This title has been a top seller in late 2024 and early 2025, receiving award nominations for titles like Best Audio Design and Best Multiplayer Game at The Game Awards. The franchise also consistently engages in crossovers; one such example would be Call of Duty Mobile announcing a partnership with Gundam in mid-2025, bringing classic mechs into the mobile game. The series remains popular with ongoing updates, seasonal content, and a strong esports footprint, including the Call of Duty League, where OpTic Texas just became back-to-back world champions in June 2025.
