Did You Know?
“Hey Jude” and “Strawberry Fields” are two of the most famous songs from The Beatles.  While “Hey Jude” was the longest running #1 single on UK and US charts, “Strawberry Fields” didn’t get any higher than #8.  John Lennon considers “Strawberry Fields” his greatest song with The Beatles and ironically, “Hey Jude” was written for John Lennon’s son when his parents got divorced.
Hey Jude
“Hey Jude” is considered one of the best rock songs of all time and was a major hit for The Beatles when it was released in 1968. It was the first single released under the Apple record label that the Beatles created. It was a top selling single around the world and has sold over 8 million copies. It had a record at the time of longest running #1 single on the Billboard charts in the US and UK. The song was originally written by Paul McCartney to comfort John Lennon’s son in the wake of his parents' divorce.

It was the first Beatles song recorded on an 8-track recorder and was recorded during a time of turmoil in the band during their Let It Be recording sessions. At over 7 minutes long, it is one of the longest singles to top the music charts. In 1969, the song was nominated for three Grammys: Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Group. It failed to win any of them. Interestingly, the B-side of the record was “Revolution” which also went on to become one of The Beatles most popular songs.
Strawberry Fields
“Strawberry Fields Forever” is a classic song by The Beatles credited as written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon.  It was released in 1967 as a double A side single along with “Penny Lane”.  The song is named after a field in Liverpool that Lennon used to play in called Strawberry Field.  The group spent 45 hours in the studio making this complex and groundbreaking song. It featured complex tracks and overdubs, along with a wide variety of sounds including Indian instruments and orchestral sounds.

John Lennon considered the song his greatest work with The Beatles.  The chart was a minor hit, topping the US charts at #8.  An experimental promotional film was recorded in time for the single’s release and featured the band’s new look, with all members having mustaches.  It also followed George Harrison’s  inspired trip to India.  The video is very psychedelic, featuring reverse video and fantastical imagery.  The song is considered influential on future British music and groups such as Pink Floyd, Traffic and ELO.  The John Lennon memorial in New York City’s Central Park is named after the song.  It has been listed on many critics’ lists as one of the top rock songs of all time.
