Both of these series are among the most expensive ever made.  With blockbuster movie level budgets, the production values make them visually beautiful to watch.  Both take place in fantasy worlds and are based on successful book series.  These are two of the most anticipated shows in history and have both seen record viewership of their initial airings.
House of the Dragon
House of the Dragon is a prequel to the highly popular cable series Game of Thrones.  Based on the book series A Song of Fire and Ice by George R.R. Martin, it takes place 200 years before the original series.  The series focuses on the downfall of the Targaryen ruling of the seven kingdoms.  It premiered in August 2022 with an initial 10 episode run and was quickly renewed for another season 5 days after.  It received moderate critical reviews but strong fan response, with over 20 million people watching the initial episode and an average of 29 million viewers over the first 5 episodes. The cost of the entire first season is estimated at $200 million, compared to the $100 million per season of Game of Thrones.  In addition, the marketing budget was estimated to be more than $100 million, which is comparable to a major motion picture.

The initial episode’s plot focuses on King Jaehaerys I Targaryen’s search for an heir to his throne.  He convenes a council that selects his grandson, Prince Viserys as the heir.  Viserys holds a tournament to celebrate the impending birth of his son, but both his wife and child die. He names Princess Rhaenyra as the heir to the throne.  In the second episode, there is conflict with Viserys brother and previous heir, Daemon, who was banished from King’s Landing.  After stealing a dragon egg, Rhaenyra follows him on her dragon and forces Daemon to renounce his claims to the throne and return the egg.  The series continues with a variety of conflicts and betrayals.
The Rings of Power
Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a TV series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books.  It is set thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.  The plot follows the events of Middle Earth’s Second Age with such major events as the forging of the ring, Dark Lord Sauran’s rise to power, and the last alliance between men and Elves.

Amazon bought the television rights to the series for $250 million with a 5 season commitment and production costs of at least $1 billion, making it the most expensive series ever.  The producers of the show intended to invoke the production values and look of the highly successful films by Peter Jackson.  It premiered in September 2022 with generally positive critical reviews, and Amazon claimed it was the highest viewed premiere in its history, with 25 million views in the first 24 hours.  The anticipated production costs are $100-150 million per episode.  The series is shot primarily in New Zealand, where the Jackson films were made.  The show has been released worldwide at the same time as the US episodes.  There was some polarization among viewers, with many loyal Lord of the Rings fans not wanting the series to be made in the first place, while others gave it positive reviews.  A large-scale marketing campaign was used to build up the hype for the show prior to its premiere.
