Did You Know?
These are two of John Lennon’s most famous songs.  “Imagine” is a worldwide phenomenon and Lennon considered “Strawberry Fields” the best song he made with the Beatles. Both songs are huge fan favorites.  “Imagine” has sold millions of copies, while “Strawberry Fields” only reached #8 in the US.  Lennon’s influential writing and music on both songs have influenced countless others.
Imagine
“Imagine” is a song written and recorded by John Lennon off his Imagine album.  It was the biggest selling song of his solo career.  It has become a worldwide anthem for peace and a world without borders.  In the UK alone, it sold more than 1.7 million copies and was named as one of the most performed songs of the 20th century. Over 200 artists have performed a cover of the song, including Madonna, Elton John and Lady Gaga and was it featured as the opening song in two Olympic Games ceremonies.

The song was inspired by several poems written by Yoko Ono.  It’s simple, but grateful lyrics have touched millions of people around the world.  In 1972 Lennon and Ono released a film called Imagine to accompany the album’s release.  It is high on many critics’ lists of greatest songs of all time. There has been some criticism of the song, especially its “unrealistic” ideals.  Many consider “Imagine” the best Lennon work, post-Beatles.  While the song wasn’t nominated for a Grammy, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.  Since 2005, the song has played in Times Square on New Year’s Eve right before the ball drops.
Strawberry Fields
“Strawberry Fields Forever” is a classic song by The Beatles credited as written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon.  It was released in 1967 as a double A side single along with “Penny Lane”.  The song is named after a field in Liverpool that Lennon used to play in called Strawberry Field.  The group spent 45 hours in the studio making this complex and groundbreaking song. It featured complex tracks and overdubs, along with a wide variety of sounds including Indian instruments and orchestral sounds.

John Lennon considered the song his greatest work with The Beatles.  The chart was a minor hit, topping the US charts at #8.  An experimental promotional film was recorded in time for the single’s release and featured the band’s new look, with all members having mustaches.  It also followed George Harrison’s  inspired trip to India.  The video is very psychedelic, featuring reverse video and fantastical imagery.  The song is considered influential on future British music and groups such as Pink Floyd, Traffic and ELO.  The John Lennon memorial in New York City’s Central Park is named after the song.  It has been listed on many critics’ lists as one of the top rock songs of all time.
