It’s A Wonderful Life and The Wizard of Oz are two of the most watched films in history, making popular appearances on TV and cable during the Christmas holiday season.  Surprisingly, both were box office flops and neither of them made profit during their initial theatrical runs.  Both of the films got renewed attention when broadcast on TV many years after their initial releases.
Wonderful LIfe
It's a Wonderful Life is a much beloved holiday film that many consider the greatest Christmas movie and one of the greatest films of all time. It was released in 1946, stars James Stewart, and was directed by Frank Capra, one of America’s greatest directors. The plot focuses on the story of George Bailey, played by Stewart, who is contemplating suicide. He is visited by a guardian angel named Clarence, played by Henry Travers, who is tasked with saving George in order to earn his wings. Clarence shows Henry flashbacks of key moments in his life to show him what an impact he has had on others.

After George wishes he was never born, Clarence reveals a timeline to George in which he doesn’t exist. George asks Clarence to restore his life and he rushes home expecting to face imminent doom and his arrest for a money scheme that he is innocent of. Instead, he encounters the local townspeople who have collected money to cover what was lost. George receives a copy of a book from Clarence just as a bell on the Christmas tree rings, and George’s daughter reminds him that it means an angel got his wings. The uplifting story is a classic holiday movie shown on television every year. Many people have made watching it a holiday ritual. The film was nominated for 5 Academy Awards Including Best Picture. It’s #1 on AFI’s list of most inspirational films. Both Capra and Stewart consider it one of their favorite films that they participated in.
Wizard of Oz
The Wizard of Oz is a cultural phenomenon, is credited as the most seen movie in history, and is often ranked by critics on lists of the greatest films ever made. Released in 1939, it’s known for its cutting edge use of Technicolor and memorable characters and musical numbers, particularly “Over the Rainbow”. At the time, it received great critical success and moderate box office success.

In 1956, CBS premiered it on television, reintroducing it to the public, followed by its adoration in the years following. Based on the L. Frank Baum book, the plot centers on the main character Dorothy (portrayed by Judy Garland), along with her dog Toto. They get transported to the magical land of Oz during a tornado in their homeland of Kansas. Upon arrival, Dorothy learns that she killed the Wicked Witch of the East. She is greeted by the good witch Glinda and munchkins, who celebrate the witch’s demise. Dorothy is told to “follow the yellow brick” road to the Wizard of Oz, who can help get her back home to Kansas. Along the way, she meets the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion, all of whom want to see the Wizard to grant them their wishes and desires. After a series of adventures, they eventually meet the Wizard and Dorothy is able to get home by tapping her ruby slippers.

The film is known for many quotes which have entered the cultural lexicon including “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore”, “I’ll get you my pretty, and your little dog too!”, “I’m melting!” and “There’s no place like home.” The film was nominated for six Academy Awards and won two.
