His breakthrough role was in Easy Rider, a 1969 film co-starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, resulting in his first Oscar award nomination. His next big role was as Jake in Roman Polanski’s Chinatown, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
