Did You Know?
Bob Dylan’s “LIke a Rolling Stone” and the band name “The Rolling Stones” were both inspired by the Muddy Waters 1950 release “Rollin’ Stone”.  The song also supposedly inspired the name of Rolling Stone magazine, which was first published after Bob Dylan’s release.  But many in the music industry, including Mick Jagger, believe it was taken from the band and Dylan’s song.
Like A Rolling Stone
“Like A Rolling Stone” is a classic song by American singer/songwriter Bob Dylan, released in 1965 as part of his Highway 61 Revisited album.  The final version had a rock feel to it, and it opens with a famous organ sequence played by Al Kooper.  It is considered revolutionary for its mixture of musical elements, Dylan’s unique voice, and the philosophical and cynical question in the lyrics “How does it feel”?  At over 6 minutes long, the record company was reluctant to release the single.  When it was leaked to popular clubs and radio stations, it was well received and became an international hit.

It peaked at #2 in the US.  Many consider it the final transformation of Dylan from folk singer to rock performer, with its use of electric instruments.  It is the #1 song of all time on many critics lists of top songs.  In 2014, Dylan’s handwritten lyrics to the song sold for $2 million, a record.  It was influential in many ways, including changing the length of pop songs played on radio - it was the first of its kind to be so long and garner popular airplay.  The song has been covered by many artists, including Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones.
Satisfaction
“(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” is one of the Rolling Stones’ most popular songs and remains one of the most well known songs around the world.  The iconic opening guitar riff by Keith Richards is instantly recognizable.  It was the first #1 hit for the Stones in the US and fourth #1 in the UK, released on the album Out of Our Heads.  The lyrics are controversial and some radio stations considered it too sexually suggestive to play over the air.  Keith Richards claims he wrote the song in his sleep and woke up not remembering that he recorded a snippet of the song, which would evolve into the eventual recording by the group.

The song is in the top 10 of many critics’ all time lists of greatest rock songs.  It's a staple of the group’s live performances and has been performed on almost every tour.  It’s been covered many times by other artists, with the most famous version by DEVO, who completely reimagined the song with a new wave twist.  In 1998, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.  Mick Jagger credits the song for turning the band into a huge and widely popular band.
