Morgan Freeman is an actor, director and voice narrator who was born in Memphis, TN in 1937. He is well known for his unique deep voice which has been utilized as a narrator in many films, TV shows and documentaries. His career began in the 1970’s as a featured member of the cast of The Electric Company children’s TV program. He earned his first Academy Award nomination for his role in the film Street Smart, followed by roles in Glory and Lean On Me.
In 1989, he starred in the film Driving Miss Daisy, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. During the 1990’s he collaborated with several prominent directors. He received another Oscar nomination for his starring role in the prison drama, The Shawshank Redemption. This was followed by roles in Se7ven, directed by David Fincher, Amistad, directed by Steven Speilberg, and Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby, for which he earned an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 2009, he earned his 5th Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Nelson Mandela in Invictus, directed by Clint Eastwood.
His deep, authoritative voice has been used as a narrator on multiple films and documentaries, including the award winning March of The Penguins and Speilberg’s War of the Worlds. Freeman is an active political and environmental activist, with numerous donations and ventures in support of those causes. Over the course of his career he’s received 5 Academy Award nominations with 1 win, 2 Golden Globe nominations and wins, 3 Emmy nominations and 1 Tony nomination.
