Psycho
Psycho is a classic American horror film that was released in 1960 and produced and directed by the master of the genre Alfred Hitchcock. It features a star filled cast including Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh and Vera Miles. It was filmed in black and white and was considered controversial at the time, although it subsequently received great critical views and is considered one of Hitchcock’s best and most famous films. It pushed the envelope for its depiction of violence, sex and deviant behavior.
The plot begins with the character Marion Crane (played by Leigh) who stays at the Bates Motel, and Norman Bates, the motel’s proprietor. Soon follows one of the most famous scenes in movie history, with Crane taking a shower and a shadowy figure in a dress (presumably Bates’ mother), repeatedly stabbing the woman to death. The scene finishes with the iconic visual of blood swirling down the shower drain. Crane’s boyfriend Sam and sister Lila learn of Marion’s stay at the Motel and visit it, where they see a figure that looks like Bates’ mother. Hiding from Bates, Lila discovers the mummified body of his mother. Dressed in a wig and dress, Bates attempts to stab Lila, but Sam subdues him. The film is considered a major work of art due to its brilliant direction, score and great acting. It is one of the earliest examples of the slasher film genre.
It was nominated for 4 Academy Awards including Best Director and Best Supporting Actress, although it didn’t win any. Several sequels and a remake were made, along with a television spin-off and prequel.
