Pulp Fiction
Pulp Fiction was released in 1994 and was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. It won many awards and is considered an influential film due to its unique storytelling, visuals and excellent acting. It features an all star cast including Bruce Willis, John Travolta, Samuel Jackson, Uma Thurman, Tim Roth and Ving Rhames. The unusual visual style and dialogue includes character monologues that reveal different perspectives on the same events as well as humor combined with strong violence.
The film structure is a series of interrelated vignettes. One of the main characters is Vincent Vega, played by Travolta, and his associate Jules Winnfeld, played by Jackson. The two retrieve a mysterious briefcase for their gangster boss Marsellus Wallace, played by Rhames. Vincent is asked to escort Wallac’s wife Mia, played by Uma Thurman. In a famous scene, the pair participate in a dance contest at a 1950’s themed restaurant. In a different vignette, Bruce Willis’ character Butch is involved in a rigged boxing match in which he double crosses Wallace and runs away to avoid being taken out. Other scenes continue the Vega storyline and complete the main plot.
The film was highly awarded, winning the Palme d’Or at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival. It was nominated for 7 Academy Awards and won 2 for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. It boosted and revitalized the careers of several of its stars, particularly Travolta, Thurman and Jackson. It appears on several critics' lists of best films ever and was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress.
