Did you know that Roblox was originally named "Dynablocks" and Minecraft was originally named "Notch"?
Roblox
Roblox was developed as an online gaming platform in 2006 by the Roblox Corporation. Roblox is a game that allows users to customize characters that are block shaped, and explore themed worlds. The game has its own currency to buy/sell "Roblox items." The game uses "safe chat" to allow players to communicate to one another, and has age restriction filters on certain words. Overall, Roblox has received generally positive reviews. Roblox has faced some backlash, as many believe the game spread inappropriate content such as racism to children. Again, this issue was combated through the use of word filtration in the chats. According to Roblox Developer officials, the game in 2017 made about $30 million in revenue and in 2019, surpassed $1 billion in revenue. In 2020, the game reportedly made $2.29 billion, and was named the "third highest grossing game of 2020". Roblox Corporation expanded into toys, selling "minifigures" resembling legos. The company partnered with others to make even more products including Roblox Monopoly edition, and Roblox Nerf Guns
Minecraft
Minecraft is an open world “sandbox” game developed by Mojang Studios and eventually sold to Microsoft.  It was made public in 2009 and fully released in 2011 and has maintained continuous popularity since its launch.  It’s considered the best-selling game of all time, with 238 million copies sold and 140 million monthly users.  The gameplay consists of the player placed in a “blocky” world that is 3D based, but also simplistic.

Players can explore landscapes, build structures, craft tools and weapons, build simple and complex machines and much more.  The worlds are infinite, generated on the fly, but created by an initial “seed” which creates a random landscape. There are four game modes: creative, survival spectator and adventure.  In creative mode, players have unlimited resources to build and explore.  In survival mode, players must maintain health and get resources.  Minecraft is often cited as one of the greatest video games of all time, and there are no other games like it.  The game also allows for multiplayer mode, in which players interact in a shared world, often via Minecraft servers.  There is also a wide variety of “mods” available, which are user-created customizations of everything from blocks to player capabilities.
