SNL
Saturday Night Live is a long running sketch comedy show that premiered in 1975. Since it began, there have been 930 episodes and it’s one of the longest shows ever to run. The show is broadcast live on Saturday nights at 11:30 PM EST from NBC studios in New York City. The show typically opens with a sketch that includes the line “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!” followed by the opening credits. The guest host then delivers a comedic monologue prior to the sketches that follow.

Sketches are mostly satirical in nature, mocking current politicians and politics, news events and pop culture, as well as original characters and sketches. There are often fake TV commercials based on real life products and ads. The show features a musical guest who performs live during the broadcast. The most popular sketches and characters are often recurring. Over the years, these have included The Blues Brothers, The Killer Bees, Mr. Bill, Mister Robinson, Gumby, Wayne’s World, Weekend Update, Jack Handey, The Spartan Cheerleaders and more. Famous stars that launched their careers from the show include John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon, and Kristen Wiig.

Guest hosts and musical acts are usually well known and popular at the time of their appearance. Over the years, there have been controversies due to technical mishaps, performer mistakes, intentional sabotage by performers and risque show content. The show has received a record 231 Emmy nominations with 86 wins.
The Office
The Office was a successful TV sitcom that originally ran in the UK and was remade for American television. It ran for 9 seasons and 201 episodes from 2005-2013. Its unique format is a mockumentary style that features the workers of the fictional paper company Dunder-Mifflin located in Scranton, PA. The key characters include Steve Carell as Michael Scott, Rainn Wilson as Dwight Schrute, John Krasinski as Jim Halpert and Jenna Fischer as Pam Beesly. Other recurring characters were played by known actors such as James Spader, Ed Helms, Mindy Kaling and Craig Robinson. The show initially received mixed critical reviews, but eventually found its footing and was widely praised and popular among audiences.

The series finale in 2013 was watched by over 5.5 million people. The show had several ongoing storylines, with a primary focus on the flirting and relationship between Jim and Pam, who eventually became a couple. Michael Scott is portrayed as a bumbling, politically incorrect manager of the office and many of the episode plots revolve around him. Dwight is often the center of negative attention and he is frequently referred to as the “assistant to the regional manager” while he calls himself “Assistant Regional Manager”. The show garnered several awards including 4 Emmys, 2 Screen Actors Guilds and 1 Golden Globe. It was named by Rolling Stone as one of the top 100 shows of all time and continues to remain popular in syndication and streaming digital media.
