Not many cartoon movie franchises have made the kind of impact as Shrek has done. When the first movie came out in 2001, it took everyone by surprise with a new twist to the old formula of the fairy tale with the introduction of an ogre, a talking donkey, and plenty of jokes for people of all ages. And then came Shrek 2 – a movie sequel that, for many, somehow outdid even the first one. Both movies became cult favorites with their own unique characters, memorable dialogues, and famous soundtracks.
Shrek
The original Shrek revolutionized the entire idea of animation movies. It came out in 2001 and brought viewers a hero by the name of Shrek – a very ordinary ogre that just wants to have a quiet life in his swamp. Instead, he finds himself on an epic adventure to save Princess Fiona together with an energetic Donkey.
The uniqueness of the original Shrek is hard to underestimate. While making fun of old-fashioned fairy tales, it provided the viewers with a rather touching plot of tolerance, friendship, and seeing beyond the looks. The humor of the movie is also unique as it can be enjoyed by both kids and adults.
Shrek made a number of icons for the animation industry as well. Its main characters became popular all over the world, making DreamWorks Animation a powerful rival to Disney.
For many fans, the original Shrek will always stay unique. The movie revolutionized animation as well as entertainment in general. Without Shrek, there would be no franchise at all.
Shrek 2
Very few sequels have been as lauded as Shrek 2. Coming out in 2004, Shrek 2 continued from where the original left off but expanded the franchise in a bigger, funnier, and more ambitious direction than before.
The inclusion of new characters such as Puss in Boots, Fairy Godmother, and Prince Charming was immediately a game changer for the franchise. Puss became one of the most loved animation characters and Fairy Godmother one of the greatest villains DreamWorks ever created.
Many claim that what makes Shrek 2 a masterpiece is its ability to combine comedy and drama in perfect measure as the movie tackles themes of insecurity, self-worth, and relationships in the process while providing some of the funniest parts of the franchise.
A part that is particularly notable in this regard is the "Holding Out for a Hero" song.
Additionally, the sequel provided more material for the fairy-tale parody which made the original so appealing by introducing an entire kingdom of Far Far Away along with some very funny characters.
Those who liked the first movie will love Shrek 2 as the franchise got even better on all fronts.
