Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog is the main character of the video game series produced by Sega and is also featured in spin-offs, comics, animated films and more. He is a blue hedgehog that can curl into a ball and run at high speeds to attack enemies. It’s one of the best selling series, with over 80 million copies sold by 2011. The original game was released in 1991 as Sega’s mascot to rival Nintendo’s Mario.
There have been over 20 games in the series including spin-offs and sub-series. Sonic also appears in several other non-Sonic and crossover games. There have been animated TV series and two live-action films. Sonic also appears in comics as well as tons of merchandise. Interestingly, his personality was based on former President Bill Clinton and his “get it done” attitude. His white shoes were inspired by Santa Claus and Michael Jackson. Fun fact: the Sonic character doesn’t have the ability to swim because of the developer’s mistaken belief that hedgehogs can’t swim. Sonic’s design varies greatly based on the medium and style in which he is drawn Other famous characters from the series include Dr. Eggman, Amy Rose, Metal Sonic and Tails.
