Star Trek
Star Trek was originally broadcast in 1966 and has become one to be one of the most successful franchises with a wide variety of TV series, films, video games and merchandise. The original series lasted 3 seasons and 79 episodes. Created by Gene Rodenberry, it follows the exploits of the Starship Enterprise and its crew consisting of Capt. James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy), “Bones” McCoy (DeForeset Kelley), Scotty (James Doohan) and Sulu (George Takai). Each episode begins with the line “To boldly go where no man has gone before” and typically features the crew encountering an alien species and some type of conflict. It generated a strong fan base (known as “Trekkies”) and spawned Star Trek conventions starting in 1972.
The first film adaptation was released in 1979 featuring the original cast followed by several movie sequels over the years. In 1987, a new series aired called Star Trek: The Next Generation, which ran until 1995 and takes place 100 years after the first series. It was a huge success and airs extensively in syndication, along with the original series. Several successful feature films were released with characters from The Next Generation series, starring Patrick Stewart as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard. In 1993, StarTrek: Deep Space Nine aired followed by several other series over the years, which have been met with mixed success. Charlotte York (played by Kristin Davs), Samantha Jones (played by Kim Cattrall), and Miranda Hobbes (played by Cynthia Nixon) are Carrie’s friends and confidants. Each has a unique personality and perspective on life and love. It explores many social themes, such as promiscuity, safe sex, sexuality, friendship and rrelationships. The show was highly acclaimed, including 54 Emmy nominations with 7 wins, 8 Golden Globe wins, and 3 Screen Actors Guild awards. It appears on many lists as one of the best TV shows of all time and is a big hit in syndication. The show was followed by two theatrical released movies, a prequel TV series and a sequel series on HBO.
