Naming Evolution 😮
Did you know that Mario was introduced to the world in Donkey Kong as the character "Jumpman" and that Princess Peach was originally introduced in Super Mario Bros as "Princess Toadstool"!?
Super Mario
Mario is the most famous video game character in history, originally appearing in the Donkey Kong arcade game.  Super Mario is the central franchise in the entire Mario universe of games.  Other sub-series in the Mario franchise include Mario Kart, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Mario vs. Donkey Kong and Paper Mario. Super Mario stands alone as the 5th best selling games ever, with more than 380 million copies sold.  The original game, Super Mario Bros., was released in 1985 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and is considered one of the first 2D side-scrolling platform games.

Many of the most well known characters and features in the Mario world were introduced including Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Bowser, Princess Peach, Mushrooms, Mario’s brother Luigi, Toad and Yoshi.  In 1996, the first 3D open world game in the series was introduced in conjunction with the launch of the Nintendo 64 console.  Super Mario 64 is considered a landmark in 3D games. The Super Mario series was ranked #1 in 2006 by IGN and in the top 3 of many other lists.  There are 19 titles in the series with new releases continuously being developed.

Donkey Kong
The Donkey Kong franchise is one of the most successful in history.  The first arcade game featured the debut of the Donkey Kong and Mario characters, both of which have appeared in countless spin offs and sequels. The first game was introduced in 1981 and was so successful that two sequels were quickly released in1982 and 1983.  The original gameplay features Mario trying to ascend a construction site to rescue his girlfriend while dodging barrels and fireballs thrown by Donkey, an ape.  The sequels, Donkey Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong 3, were variations on the original gameplay.  The game was ported to all the home gaming systems and was a big success.

There was even a cartoon TV series that aired in 1997.  In 2007, a documentary,The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, showcased the competitive following of the original arcade game. A popular phrase “It's on like Donkey Kong” was inspired by the original game. The Donkey Kong character has crossed over into many games, including several in the Mario series and Smash Brothers.  The Mario character (originally called Jumpman) is probably the most well known video game character of all time and has been spun off to a tremendous number of games and variations.
