The Big Bang Theory
The Big Bang Theory was a hugely popular sitcom series that ran for 12 seasons. The show focuses on five key characters: Leonard (played by Johnny Galecki), Sheldon (played by Jim Parsons), Penny (played by Kelly Cuoco), Howard (played by Simon Helberg), and Raj (played by Kunai Nayyar). Other supporting characters added over the course of the series include Amy (played by Myam Bialik), Bernadette (played by Melissa Rauch) and Stuart (played by Kevin Sussman). The premise of the show follows the lives and relationship of the “geeky” friends, some of whom live together in the same apartment building. Their careers are all science related, with the four main characters working at Caltech. Penny and Leonard eventually date and fall in love with each other, as do Howard and Bernadette. Even the super repressive Sheldon finds love with Amy. There are many references to “geeky” pop-culture such as Star Trek, superheroes, comics, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.
The show originally received mixed critical reviews but improved over the next few seasons. It eventually reached the #1 spot by its 11th season. It was highly nominated and awarded, with 46 Emmy nominations and 7 wins. There were many guest celebrity cameos over the years, the highlights being the scientists Neil deGrasse Tyson and Stephen Hawking. The show also aired internationally in the UK and Canada, and has done extremely well in syndication. A spin-off called Young Sheldon was developed and also received strong reception.
