So which is more ridiculous?
Both of these franchises feature highly unrealistic plots and visuals. The Sharknado films showcase literal sharks falling from the sky. Fast and Furious films are known for their crazy, unbelievable car and vehicle chases, including cars falling from an airplane. Fans of both these films expect the crazy plot points and on screen action.
The Fast and the Furious
The Fast and the Furious is a movie franchise that has 9 released films, with a planned 10th installment scheduled for 2023. It is one of the highest grossing franchises with over $6 billion in revenue to-date. It has spurned other media vehicles such as commercials, toys and video games. It is credited with launching the careers of stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker.
The first film was released in 2001 and grossed over $207 million. It set up the main premise of car hijackers being sought after by undercover cops. Future installments continue with much of the same characters with a rotation of settings,, including international. All releases were box office hits, with the most successful being Furious 7 with $1.5 billion worldwide and The Fate of the Furious with $1.2 billion worldwide. The key characters and starts include Dominic “Dom” Toretto played by Vin Diesel, Brion O’Conner played by Paul Walker, Luke Hobbes played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Decard Shaw played by Jason Stratham, Lefty Ortiz played by Michelle Rodriguez, Jakob Toretto played by John Cena and Roman Pearce played by Tyrese Gibson.
Paul Walker died in a car accident before completing filming of Furious 7, and the script was re-written to take this into account. Several subsequent sequels were made without his character. Media spin-offs include attractions at Universal Studios, a live action car stunt show that toured, video games and toys.
Sharknado
Sharknado is a series of 6 made for television movies released on the SyFy cable network. The original film was released in 2013 and was an unexpected hit, further sequels were released. The basic premise is that it’s main characters encounter a series of tornados full of sharks, or “sharknados”. The main stars are Ian Ziering and Tara Reid, who appear in all 6 films. Most of the films were panned by critics but loved by fans, with an average of 2.5 million viewers per film.
The franchise is set up in the first film when a cyclone hits in the water near Los Angeles and floods the city with shark infested waters. Soon after a series of tornados sweeps up the water and dumps sharks from the sky. After its initial airing, Sharknado received a lot of social media attention, especially on Twitter. It included mentions by several celebrities such as Wil Wheaton, Damon LIdelof and Olivia Wilde, as well as humorous tweets from The National Weather Service and The Red Cross. It even had a one night run in movie theaters, running in over 200 theaters throughout the country. It has become a cult film and a “so bad it’s good” guilty pleasure. The premise of each subsequent film seems more ridiculous, but their popularity continued. The final installment, released in 2018 is called The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time and includes ridiculous time travel and includes dinosaur encounters, medieval times, colonial times and cyborg heads.
