It’s based on a comic book series that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where zombies (known as “walkers’) chase after humans and other animals to eat them. The main character is Rick Grimes who wakes up from a coma in this new world order and leads a group of people who are trying to survive zombie attacks. Throughout the series, different survivor groups encounter each other and often engage in conflict due to their different rules and morals.
The show has a large ensemble cast that rotates often, as characters are frequently killed off. The show is known for its gory visuals and violence, although over the years it has focused more on character development. Its strong viewership numbers peaked in 2014 when that season’s premiere was watched by 17.3 million people which made it the most popular episode in cable history. Due to its popularity, there have been two spin-off series, Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond in addition to several video games. Plans for 3 films have been announced along with other spin-off shows. It has received widespread critical acclaim and has been nominated for several awards, although it hasn’t won any major awards.
