Simpsons
The Simpsons is an animated series that first aired in 1989 and originated from The Tracy Ullman Show in 1987. As of 2022, it is the longest running animated series, sitcom and scripted primetime show. It features a dysfunctional family that lives in the fictional town of Springfield with the key characters of father Homer, mother Marge and kids Bart, Lisa and Maggie. Over the years, there have been a wide variety of recurring supporting characters such as Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, Braney Gumble, Seymour Skinner, Apu, Mayor Quimby, Krusty the Klown and Smithers.

Many episodes also feature celebrity guest stars, who often appear as themselves in the show. These have included major known actors, athletes, musicians and politicians. One of the biggest stars to appear was Michael Jackson in 1991 who was featured as a patient in a mental institute. Conceived by Matt Groening and James L. Brooks, the show has run for over 720 episodes and has spurned an industry of comic books, video games, merchandise and a full length feature film, The Simpsons Movie, in 2007. Several catchphrases have become part of American culture including Homer’s “D’oh” and Bart’s “Don’t have a cow man.” Some of the episodes and jokes have gained notoriety for predicting future events, such as the 2007 episode that featured Donald Trump as president. The show has been highly awarded over the years, winning 34 Emmys and 2 Peabody Awards. The show also received its own Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2000.
Walking Dead
The Walking Dead is a long running cable TV show that first aired in 2010. Season 11 aired from 2021-22 and is expected to be the last one. It’s based on a comic book series that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where zombies (known as “walkers’) chase after humans and other animals to eat them. The main character is Rick Grimes who wakes up from a coma in this new world order and leads a group of people who are trying to survive zombie attacks. Throughout the series, different survivor groups encounter each other and often engage in conflict due to their different rules and morals.

The show has a large ensemble cast that rotates often, as characters are frequently killed off. The show is known for its gory visuals and violence, although over the years it has focused more on character development. Its strong viewership numbers peaked in 2014 when that season’s premiere was watched by 17.3 million people which made it the most popular episode in cable history. Due to its popularity, there have been two spin-off series, Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond in addition to several video games. Plans for 3 films have been announced along with other spin-off shows. It has received widespread critical acclaim and has been nominated for several awards, although it hasn’t won any major awards. Viewership has declined over the years, but the franchise remains popular. The show has been praised for its diversity of cast and characters over the years.
