Meryl Streep is a highly acclaimed and awarded actress in American film. She is the most nominated performer in history, with 21 Academy Award nominations, including 17 for Best Actress and 4 for Best Supporting Actress. She has also been nominated for 6 Grammy Awards, 1 Tony Award, 5 Emmy awards, including 3 wins, and 32 Golden Globe nominations, winning 8. She is one of the few people to be nominated for the rare EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) and one of only 13 performers to win an Academy Award in both acting categories.
Born in 1949, she made her stage debut in 1976, receiving a Tony award nomination for her role in 27 Wagons Full of Cotton. In 1977, her film debut was in Julia, in which she had a small role. She won an Emmy in 1978 for the TV mini-series Holocaust and got an Oscar nomination the same year for her role in The Deer Hunter. Her first Oscar win came in 1979 for Best Supporting Actress in Kramer vs. Kramer, co-starring Dustin Hoffman. Her other award winning film roles include Sophie’s Choice and The Iron Lady. She is well known for being able to imitate a wide range of accents in movies such as Out of Africa, French Lieutenant’s Woman, The Bridges of Madison County, Ironweed and more. In 2017, she was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement award at the Golden Globes. She is politically active, often espousing her views and supporting candidates she believes in.
